From the Pastor
Dr. Dwight Kilbourne
Do you know that church membership is a biblical concept? For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body (1 Corinthians 12:12-13).
Here in 1 Corinthians Paul uses the image of body parts to illustrate what it means to be a member of the Church. As members, we are part of the body of Christ. Through our baptism, we are initiated into the Church.
In the United Methodist Church, we celebrate formal membership in each local church. For someone to become a member, they must confess their faith and commit to support the church. In our tradition, membership is meaningful. Each member of the church is part of the church body and has a unique role to play in the life of the church. If a member is “missing,” our church and our ministry suffer. In addition, the “missing member” lacks the supportive nurture the church provides.
Recently in reviewing our membership roles, we found 514 names of members for whom we have no contact information. These persons may have moved away, become inactive or associated with another church.
We need your help. Periodically for the next few months, we will include a list of these names in the newsletter. If you know where this person lives, have contact information, or are aware they have joined another church, please contact Barbara Berwanger (756-2021, ext. 3121 or barbarab@fcumc.org).
